When it was announced that HBO was looking to expand the “Game of Thrones” franchise past the original series, people were skeptical. However, after the false start of “The Long Night” pilot that was scrapped, the network hit it big (bigger than people were probably expecting) with “House of the Dragon.” Now, fans (and investors) are anxious to find out what HBO has up its sleeve for the next spinoff. Well, it appears we’re headed even further back in time to the beginning of a dynasty. The dynasty.
According to Variety, HBO is in the early stages of development on a new “Game of Thrones” prequel series that would find viewers going back even further than “House of the Dragon” to see how the legendary Aegon I became the first ruler of Westeros and created the Targaryen dynasty. Not only that but apparently, HBO is floating the idea of perhaps creating a feature film that would serve as a lead-in for the new prequel, setting the stage for the show. But that latter bit is said to be more of an idea than anything at this point.
For those not steeped in ‘Thrones’ lore, Aegon Targaryen (the first of his name, as they say) worked with his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, to nearly all of the kingdoms using their army of dragons. After the battle, the conquered kingdoms were turned into the Westeros that we know and love. Aegon I would then create the Iron Throne and the Targaryen house ruled the kingdom for generations.
Again, this potential series is in the early stages of development, so there aren’t any writers attached. However, the report claims that HBO is really high on this idea and is looking for people to begin work on the series as soon as possible. Obviously, if this series moves forward, it would have great synergy with “House of the Dragon,” which takes place between the events of this new series and the original “Game of Thrones,” serving as a fairly extensive history of the strife in Westeros.
