Got a Tip?

‘Deadpool 3’: Emma Corrin Confirms Villain Role & Calls MCU Continuity “An Absolute Mind-F*ck”

We’ve said this a million times when new actors join the Marvel Cinematic Universe—fans need to stop expecting these people to be diehard fans of the franchise. People are genuinely surprised when an actor admits to not knowing the inner workings of who Nick Fury is and what happened between Captain America and Iron Man in ‘Civil War.’ And after dozens of films and TV projects, it’s hard for people to expect anyone other than diehard fans to know everything about the various storylines and characters. All that to say, it’s not a shock to know Emma Corrin, who was cast in “Deadpool 3,” isn’t a huge Marvel fan and had to get a debriefing when joining the film.

Speaking to Empire, Emma Corrin admitted that they are not a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, only watching a couple of the films. However, they are well aware fans are passionate about these projects, so Corrin wanted to get a debriefing so they could understand what is going on before jumping into “Deadpool 3.”

And while they didn’t explain who they are playing in the forthcoming sequel, Corrin admitted that it is a villain role.

“I feel really excited to play a villain,” said Corrin. “I haven’t done that, and it’s an itch I want to scratch.”

Corrin is probably best known for their work in “The Crown” and will next be seen in Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s next series, “A Murder at the End of the World.” And outside of a small role in Season 1 of DC’s “Pennyworth” TV series, Corrin doesn’t have any extensive superhero experience. So, it makes sense that they would need a quick rundown of what is going on.

“I’d heard about the project but, classic Marvel, they couldn’t tell me anything about it. Absolutely nothing. Zilch,” Corrin said. “So I met [Shawn Levy, director of ‘Deadpool 3’] being like, ‘I don’t know what this is about.’”

“Hands up, I’m not a Marvel person,” they added. “I’ve watched ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Black Panther.’ I was like, ‘Look, you’re gonna have to debrief me into this.’ It’s such an intricate world. There’s so much to it, it’s an absolute mind-fuck. All the language and the Easter eggs, and this person is related to that person who did this, and this person came back and this person’s dead… it’s amazing. I really understand why it means as much as it does to so many people. It’s a phenomenon, and I feel really lucky to be part of it. Especially ‘Deadpool,’ because I love the fact that it’s self-aware and critical of its own inner-workings.”

While Corrin admitted to not being a fan of Marvel films and TV projects, it’s clear the actor is excited to be a part of the ‘Deadpool’ franchise, which gleefully pokes fun at the whole superhero world. That said, Corrin should probably make sure they have a general understanding of the major MCU plot points before the promotion of the film happens in 2024.

As of now (SAG strike could change things, obviously), “Deadpool 3” is expected to arrive in theaters on May 3, 2024.
