Got a Tip?

‘Hannibal’: Mads Mikkelsen Teases Series Return & Says The Character’s “Not Over Yet”

For a show that only had 39 episodes over three seasons, it’s a bit shocking to hear how passionate people are about “Hannibal.” Even folks who aren’t fans of network TV commend Bryan Fuller’s reimagining of the classic serial killer character from “Silence of the Lambs.” It feels like a show that was just too far ahead of its time, and it got cancelled because of that. Well, it’s been almost a decade since the show prematurely finished its run, but star Mads Mikkelsen is hinting that it might not be dead.

Speaking to Business Insider, Mads Mikkelsen was asked about his career and the various franchises he’s been a part of. However, it’s clear things were different whenever he talked about “Hannibal.” And he went so far as to say that the cannibal serial killer might not be gone for good.

“I really don’t want to go back to any of my characters, except maybe for Hannibal because he’s not over yet,” teased the actor.

But what does “not over yet” mean? Does that mean a revival is around the corner? Are people working on it? The fans have been dying to see more “Hannibal” since it was cancelled nearly a decade ago. Well, it sounds as if things are in motion, but it’s still too early to know exactly what is happening.

“It’s no secret that all of us who were part of the cast and Bryan [Fuller], we all want to go back. It’s got to happen eventually sooner than later because we’re not getting any younger, right?” said Mikkelsen. “But the story itself can jump, it can have that gap, which is fine. So it’s all about finding a home for it, but that’s nothing concrete out there now.”

He added, “Why that’s the case? I don’t know. We love the show and there seem to be a lot of other people liking it as well. But then I got the chance to work with [Fuller] on ‘Dust Bunny,’ so I got a little whiff of the old times.”

As for what the revival might look like, especially for his character along with Hugh Dancy’s Will Graham, Mikkelsen isn’t sharing any details, but apparently he’s heard some of the ideas.

“He’s got a few ideas, Bryan,” he said. “So I can’t really reveal any, in case we do start, but I’m sure [Hannibal and Graham] made it somehow.”

So, it does sound a little like the teasing that we’ve been hearing for years now. But there does seem to be a little bit more certainty coming from Mikkelsen about something coming together for the “Hannibal” fans. And honestly, the series has only grown in popularity thanks to streaming. You have to assume people would really be excited to see the series make a return, even if its been so long since the end.
