Seth Rogen Says Anne Hathaway Quit ‘Knocked Up’ Because She Didn’t Want To Do The Baby “Crowning” Scene

Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen are doing the press rounds right now for “The Invite,” Wilde’s new comedy about a dinner invite between neighbors that goes to some very unexpected places. But did the pair’s stop by “The A24 Podcast” do the same thing? In a manner of speaking, yes, as the question about how Wilde and Rogen first met elicited a humorous anecdote about an actress who turned down a role opposite Rogen in one of his biggest early hits.

So where did Wilde and Rogen first meet? We met because I auditioned for “Knocked Up,” confirmed Wilde. “We need to find the footage and then destroy it.” Rogen reassured her that Wilde’s audition for the role that went to Katherine Heigl was fine, but then revealed that another actress had originally scored the part. “It was Anne Hathaway who quit the movie,” said Rogen.

So why did Hathaway quit? “Because of the crowning right? Is that real?” asked Wilde. Wilde refers to a scene in the climax of “Knocked Up,” when Heigl’s character gives birth, including explicit shots of the newborn. “Yeah, I mean…it could have been a hundred million things. That was what I remember being told,” Rogen replied. “Crowning is a tough one. She didn’t want the crowning of the baby to be visually representative. Even though it wasn’t going to be hers.”

Daniel Day-Lewis wouldn’t do that,” Rogen continued joking. “Like, that’s a level of acting. It’s obviously not real. But she didn’t even want…she felt that it was not her brand. Part of me also…we had started rehearsing the movie…maybe she was just like, ‘I don’t know if this is for me.’ I don’t know. I will take what she said at face value, which was the crowning.”

“She had a sense, and she knew it was not for her,” Rogen went on. “And history will tell…she has been right about a lot more things than I have over the years. So I think she was probably right.” As for Heigl, “Rogen said, “She knew what was right for her, yes. And then Heigl was great. Katie Heigl was great.”
