When Taika Waititi released “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017, the refreshingly comedic take on God Of Thunder was overwhelmingly well received, with fans loving the more irreverent take on the Norse God. Most critics and fans still consider it the best “Thor” film. However, the same cannot be said about 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which left a bad taste in the mouth of the same franchise enthusiasts— its humor dialed up far too wacky and extreme for most. While “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth has shared similar feelings about his disappointment with the film in the past, in a new interview, the actor essentially doubled down on his regrets about the film.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, while the actor didn’t blame Waititi, he didn’t give his performance the most charitable assessment. “I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself,” he said. “I didn’t stick the landing.”
Earlier in the article, while he’s not directly quoted, Vanity Fair writes, “Hemsworth thinks he owes the audience another ‘Thor’ after what felt like a whiff with ‘Thor: Love and Thunder,’” which jibes with reports that Hemsworth wants to make a “Thor 5,” to get the character right at least one last time.
While no official word of a “Thor 5” has been revealed, Hemsworth does turn up in a brief cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine” as detailed recently at CinemaCon, suggesting that the actor still feels the character is still worthy.
As for his role in “Furiosa: A Mad Max” story, much of his involvement came from being thunderstruck after he saw “Fury Road” in 2015, calling his reps about it, and wanting to go meet George Miller as soon he got out of the film.
“I came out of it and called my agent,” he explained. “I haven’t been able to completely immerse myself in a film as a fan for years because I’ve seen behind the curtain, and the magic is gone. This is the first film in years where I felt 100 percent involved in the experience as a true fan.”
In ‘Furiosa,’ Hemsworth portrays the villainous Warlord Dementus, a drastic change for the actor usually known for playing heroic roles. ‘Furiosa’ is scheduled to premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May before opening in a wide theatrical release on May 24.
