Whenever Marvel releases a project that deals with the idea of a multiverse, fans go crazy with rumors about who will show up as a cameo. And for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the multiverse story was compounded by the fact that many believe the film will end the “X-Men” universe that began over at Fox in 2000. Fans are just assuming we’ll see cameos galore from the various “X-Men” films. Director Shawn Levy doesn’t dispute any of this, but he wants to assure fans that none of the cameos are gratuitous.
Speaking to EW, “Deadpool & Wolverine” filmmaker Shawn Levy talked about his stance on cameos in the film. Through sneaky set photos and marketing materials, some of the surprise cameos have already been spoiled, as fans are desperately trying to put the puzzle together. But Levy isn’t here to spoil anything. He just wants everyone to know that the appearances from other characters is all in service of the story.
“I’ll say we didn’t start off with a wishlist,” Levy says of all these special appearances. “From the day we started devising this Deadpool and Wolverine story, we let the story dictate the characters, not the other way around. Aaron [Stanford] and his return as Pyro was an outgrowth of that, and that applies to pretty much all the characters you’ll see in the movie.”
As mentioned, pesky illegal set photos have already spoiled some of the cameos in the film. And the trailer has shown Aaron Stanford, which is why Levy is fine talking about him. But even still, there are fans who keep throwing out some crazy ideas as possibilities for this film. It harkens back to just a couple years ago when Marvel Studios released “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” a film that had more articles written about cameos than any other. Ultimately, fans were a bit let down when wild rumors like Tom Cruise as Iron Man didn’t pan out.
We’ll find out the full list of cameos when “Deadpool & Wolverine” debuts in theaters on July 26.
