In recent years, we’ve seen two August Wilson plays get adapted into feature films— “Fences” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Both of those films earned acclaim from critics and plenty of awards. Will the third time be a charm, as well? That’s what Netflix is hoping for with “The Piano Lesson.”

As seen in the trailer, “The Piano Lesson” tells the story of the Charles family. They are being torn apart through a disagreement about what to do with the prized piano. One side wants to sell it, while the other side thinks it has too much familial significance to sell it off.
The film features an incredibly talented ensemble cast which includes Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Jerrika Hinton, Gail Bean, Danielle Deadwyler, and Corey Hawkins. “The Piano Lesson” is directed by Malcolm Washington, who co-wrote the feature alongside Virgil Williams. The film marks the directorial debut for Washington.
“The Piano Lesson” arrives in select theaters on November 8 before hitting Netflix on November 22. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
A battle is brewing in the Charles Household. At the center stands a prized heirloom piano tearing two siblings apart. On one side, a brother (John David Washington) plans to build the family fortune by selling it. On the other, a sister (Danielle Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to hold onto the sole vestige of the family’s heritage. Their uncle (Samuel L. Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past.
