Could Derek Cianfrance‘s “Roofman” be next year’s most anticipated film? After this new bit of casting news, it may be. Deadline reports that Cianfrance has his entire ensemble set up for his true-crime pic after casting Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst, and Peter Dinklage. Read on for the complete list of new castings.
Ben Mendelsohn joins the film with LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, and Uzo Aduba as secondary players. Melonie Diaz, Molly Price, Lily Collias, Emory Cohen, and Tony Revolori round out the ensemble, a veritable who’s who of strong character actors. Cianfrance’s latest is notably the third major casting for Mendelsohn this week, along with John Michael McDonagh‘s “Fear Is The Rider“ and Rob Savage‘s “Molepeople.”
As noted in yesterday’s piece, “Roofman” stars Tatum as an ex-Army Reserve officer and struggling father who resorts to spree robberies of McDonald’s restaurants to make ends meet. Based on a true story from the late ’90s, Cianfrance and Kirt Gunn‘s script expands his story to include a prison break-out, a prolonged hideout in a toy store, and a budding romance with a single mom with a young daugther. But since redemption relies on one last score, don’t expect this story to have a happy ending…
“Roofman” has a whole slew of producers behind it as it aims to start shooting next year: Jamie Patricof, Lynette Howell Taylor, Alex Orlovsky, Duncan Montgomery, and Dylan Sellers. Executive producers on the project include Jonathan Montepare, Chris Parker, Tatum, Cianfrance, Charles Barsamian, Jonathan Glickman, Thom Zadra, Beacky Sloviter, Matt von Waaden, Mark von Waade, Jack Selby, Rick Covert, and Sam Romano. Rachel Halilej also co-produce the film. “Roofman” is a Paramount Pictures production, with Miramax handling US/NA distribution and FilmNation Entertainment handling international sales. Aperture Media Partners finances.
What’s not to love about that “Roofman” cast list? And based on its subject, expect Cianfrance’s latest to be a spiritual sequel to his 2012 film “The Place Beyond The Pines,” the director’s most celebrated movie. Let’s call that a return to form after not making a movie in nearly a decade.
Paramount has “Roofman” slated for an October 3, 2025 theatrical release.
