After the release of “Godzilla Minus One,” there was intense speculation about what filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki might do next. Would he work on an American blockbuster? Could he get snatched up by Lucasfilm or Marvel Studios? Well, it was recently revealed that he is actually going to stay in Japan and work on another “Godzilla” film. But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t talked to folks from American studios.
Speaking at a recent Tokyo International Film Festival event (via VirtualGorilla) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of “Godzilla,” Takashi Yamazaki talked about an interaction he had with the head of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige. While it’s unclear where they might have met, it does sound like it was something said in passing. Regardless, it appears Feige and the folks at Marvel Studios are inspired by the success of “Godzilla Minus One.”
“The president of Marvel told me, ‘Wadatsumi!'” Yamazaki said. “He told me, ‘We’re all having meetings every day to see if we can make it happen like that.’ I think it’s just lip service.” (For those unsure, “Wadatsumi” is the codename given to the operation to take down Godzilla.)

If this comment is true and Feige said that to Yamazaki, then perhaps there’s hope that Marvel Studios will learn from one of the best breakout films of last year. It’s not controversial to say “Godzilla Minus One” is a better film than many of the recent offerings from Marvel Studios.
Apparently, at the same event, Yamazaki also talked about getting an offer to work on an American project. However, he didn’t go into any detail about what it might be. For now, at least, it does seem as if the filmmaker is perfectly happy working on another “Godzilla” film and doesn’t have a burning desire to come to an American production.
