‘The Catch’: Chris Pine May Join Emma Stone On Upcoming Rom-Com

Is another romantic movie like the Sundance 2026 fave “Carousel” in the cards for Chris Pine? Deadline reports one may be, only this one, “The Catch,” would be a rom-com, not a drama.

Pine would have quite the co-star if he indeed signs on for the Universal project: “Bugonia” actress and Yorgos Lanthimos muse Emma Stone. But Lanthimos isn’t directing this one. No, it’s Dave McCary behind the camera, directing a script from Patrick Kang and Michael Levin. “The Catch” will be Stone’s first film since her Oscar-nominated turn in Lanthimos’ 2025 film, a role that may give her a third Best Actress win.

As for plot details on “The Catch,” there’s none to reveal at the moment. Producers on the pic include Shawn Levy and Dan Levine via 21 Laps, as well as Michael H. Weber, and Stone, McCary, and Ali Herting via Fruit Tree. The film is part of a first-look deal Fruit Tree signed with Universal back in 2024. Erik Baiers and Jacqueline Garell will oversee for Universal.

Pine is circling the lead role opposite Stone in “The Catch,” but he’s not officially on board just yet. If it happens, though, it’ll be another upcoming film for the actor after “Carousel” and “Alpha Gang,” a sci-fi film currently in post. As noted earlier, “Carousel” had strong marks out of Sundance in January; The Playlist’s review awarded it a C+/B-.

Stay tuned for more detail on “The Catch” as they arrive.
