The SAG Awards are now the Actor Awards, but they are still a major precursor to the Oscars and often, the Emmy Awards. This year, “Sinners” took the Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture prize. “The Studio” took the Ensemble in a Comedy Series honor while “The Pitt” won Ensemble in a Drama Series. The show itself was a bit of a watered-down dud, but some unexpected and moving wins kept it captivating enough.

Jessie Buckley continued her awards sweep, taking Female Actor in a Motion Picture for “Hamnet.” In a massive upset, and perhaps a last-minute Oscar twist, Michael B. Jordan won Male Actor in a Motion Picture for “Sinners.”
Male Actor in a Supporting Role went to Sean Penn for “One Battle After Another.” Penn, who also won the BAFTA Award last Sunday, was not in attendance. The Female Actor in a Supporting Role went to Amy Madigan for “Weapons.” This was her first SAG nomination.
In a surprise, and to the delight of her fellow nominees, Keri Russell took Female Actor in a Drama Series for “The Diplomat.” Another surprise was Michelle Williams taking Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for “Dying for Sex.” Totally expected was Emmy and Golden Globe winner Noah Wyle winning Male Actor in a Drama Series for “The Pitt.” As was Owen Cooper winning Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for “Adolescence.” Cooper was not able to attend, despite the fact that it was the last in-person honor he could win, in the U.S. at least, for his performance.
Male Actor in a Comedy Series went to Seth Rogen for “The Studio.” He picked up his first PGA Award win last night as well. Rogen cracked that SAG was smart enough to pay their employees enough to hold an awards show, “Take notes WGA,” after that guild canceled the West Coast WGA Awards ceremony due to an employee strike.
Catherine O’Hara, who passed away a little over a month ago, took Female Actor in a Comedy Series for “The Studio.” She received a standing ovation as many of the audience were in tears. Rogen accepted on her behalf, saying, “She showed you can be a genius and kind.”
Woody Harrelson presented Harrison Ford with his Lifetime Achievement Award. Ford joked it’s “a little weird to be getting this award halfway through my career.” The 83-year-old thanked George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Fred Roos, and his manager for 30 years, Pat McQueeney. Of the latter two, he noted, “I feel them here tonight. They would be happy for me.”
Before the ceremony began, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and “The Last of Us” won the Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture and Television Series, respectfully. This is the second “Mission” film to win this honor after “Dead Reckoning Part One” in 2024. “The Last of Us” also won for its first season two years ago.
