‘Maddie’s Secret’ Trailer: John Early’s Directorial Debut Turns Viral Food Fame Into Comedy Camp Melodrama

John Early writes, directs, and stars in the TIFF comedy about a dishwasher whose viral food-media fame threatens to expose her past.

The cooking-video economy has already given the culture enough strange artifacts to fill a dozen satire scripts, so it was probably only a matter of time before outrageous comedian John Early (“Search Party,” “Would It Kill You To Laugh?”) turned it into a melodrama. In Maddie’s Secret,” the comedian, writer, and actor makes his feature directorial debut with a campy, food-media send-up about sudden online fame, professional pressure, and one very carefully guarded past.

Written and directed by Early, the film stars Early as Maddie, a dishwasher at a trendy food content creation company whose life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes a viral sensation. At home, things appear almost aggressively picturesque: an adoring husband, a fiercely loyal best friend, and a pantry stocked with woman-owned, ethically sourced chili crisp. But the more Maddie’s profile rises, the more the pressure threatens to bring back a secret she has worked hard to bury.

The film also stars Kate Berlant, Eric Rahill, Claudia O’Doherty, Conner O’Malley, Vanessa Bayer, Chris Bauer, and Kristen Johnston. Early produced alongside Harris Mayersohn and Luca Intili, with Chris Quintos Cathcart, Tyler Boehm, Hannah Dweck, Ted Schaefer, Sarah Herrman, Deb Tam, Matthew Rosenthal, and Marissa Heringer executive producing.

“Maddie’s Secret” had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where The Playlist’s review praised Early’s confidence behind the camera, writing, “The surprise is Early’s confidence and vision behind the camera in his feature directorial debut.” The review also noted the film’s affection for late-’80s and ’90s TV-movie melodrama, with Early aiming his satire at “the hilarious tropes of the movie-of-the-week genre.”

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Maddie’s Secret” is comedian, writer, and actor John Early’s critically acclaimed directorial debut starring himself as Maddie, a plucky dishwasher who leaps to viral superstardom at a trendy food content creation company. While her life seems picturesque—complete with an adoring husband (Eric Rahill), ride-or-die best friend (Kate Berlant), and a cupboard full of woman-owned, ethically-sourced chili crisp to boot—mounting professional pressures threaten to reawaken a hidden secret from her troubled past. A pitch-perfect blend of satire, melodrama, daring tonal shifts, and intimate performances, the film marks a bold new voice in contemporary cinema.
