Danny Boyle Says ‘28 Years Later’ Trilogy Capper Has Been Delayed To 2027

Is 28 Years Later 3” still a go over at Sony? That’s been a question on the mind of horror fans since Nia DaCosta‘s “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” hit theaters earlier this year — and ended up not doing quite as well commercially as the studio had hoped. JoBlo has an update on that front, and it comes in a quote from franchise maestro (or, one of them, next to Alex Garland), director Danny Boyle.

According to Boyle, “28 Years Later 3” indeed remains in the pipeline, and he still plans to direct, but the production hit a scheduling snare that forced Sony to delay shooting until next year. “We ran out of time,” explained the director. “Because it’s set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year — we literally ran out of time.”

So, what does that mean for production dates for the trilogy capper? Boyle didn’t have a conclusive answer there, but hinted at 2027. “So it’ll be, hopefully, fingers crossed next year,” he continued. “But there’s the enthusiasm there, and Alex [Garland] has done a wonderful script for it.”

Now, while that’s an update, it’s not one that inspires confidence that Boyle making “28 Years Later 3” is indeed inevitable. If anything, the lack of concrete shooting dates makes the film’s future sound conditional more than anything else. And again, considering the meager box office showing of “The Bone Temple” to Boyle’s “28 Years Later,” that’s understandable. The first was a hit, the follow-up not so much; DaCosta’s, arguably the superior of the two, didn’t even gross back its budget globally during its theatrical run.

So let’s call Boyle’s “28 Years Later 3” update good news, albeit tentative good news. Fans of the zombie films may breathe a little easier once a more official announcement arrives, and that shouldn’t happen until after Boyle wraps work on his current movie, “Ink,” set for a 2027 theatrical release. If the third film happens, expect Cillian Murphy back to star (no Ralph Fiennes or Jack O’Connell, though, obviously).
