'Gran Turismo' The Latest Car Based Videogame Getting Turned Into A Movie

null

Video games and fast cars have been mainstays providing the “high-octane” quality to action movies for years. Universal and Dreamworks have cornered the market this summer with the rather successful “Fast and Furious 6,” and even kids’ movies now have to be fast, as seen with the less successful “Turbo.” Sony doesn’t want to be left behind and is jumping into a car of their own with an adaptation of the video game “Gran Turismo.”

“Gran Turismo” is based on the popular game played on Sony Playstation, touted at the “single biggest franchise” for the console, having sold 70 million copies worldwide, with the latest installment of the series, “Gran Turismo 6” due out next year. The game adaptation will be guided by producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti. It’s interesting that the duo’s latest claim to fame for working on the upcoming “50 Shades of Gray” adaptation…doesn’t inspire much confidence for this film. But then again, they were behind “The Social Network,” so maybe this will be like ‘Furious 6’ but with bondage gear and laptops?

The movie is in the very early stages, so there’s no screenwriter, director, or stars attached. The only plot suggestions have been various videos posted to reports on the movie that show racing cars and nothing else. Name-branding appears to be important to these racing movies, and we aren’t done with them; another “Fast and Furious” movie is due out next year, Dreamworks has “Need for Speedwith Aaron Paul coming and Legendary is hoping to work up a “Hot Wheels” movie in the future. Who says Hollywood doesn’t have any original ideas? [The Wrap]
