Adam Wingard Thinks Future MonsterVerse Films Should Have Even Fewer Humans: “I Think People Are Ready For It”

There is a lot to talk about when it comes to “Godzilla vs. Kong.” You can call it a popcorn blockbuster. You might even be able to call it, uh, not great. But one thing is undeniable, the title of the film doesn’t lie. You will definitely watch plenty of fighting between the huge lizard with blue laser breath and a giant ape with a glowing ax. And if director Adam Wingard has anything to say about it, the next film will have even more monsters.

Speaking to EW, Adam Wingard talked about his idea for the direction Legendary Pictures should move into if there’s another MonsterVerse film after “Godzilla vs. Kong.” And if there is, the filmmaker believes the next feature should almost completely ditch the human element and focus entirely on the big bad monsters.

“I think ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ is the first time that we’ve really truly been able to have full sequences where the film leaves the humans and stays with the monsters, just like any other character,” said the filmmaker. “That’s a big breakthrough VFX-wise and even story-wise. If there’s another MonsterVerse movie, in my opinion, it should be the first full-on monster film. I would say, 30 percent humans, the rest monsters, basically flipping the formula of what a lot of these movies generally are. I think people are ready for it.”

Honestly, seeing these comments, you have to wonder how much more insignificant can you possibly make the humans in a sequel? For those that watched “Godzilla vs. Kong” (and I make my thoughts incredibly clear in the most recent episode of The Playlist Podcast), it’s clear the humans barely serve a purpose at all in the film. Removing the human element (and thus, a lot of the heart and soul of the film) might either be the most genius thing possible or the worst idea ever to grace this franchise. Honestly, it’s hard to tell.

Either way, you have to wonder what a human-less “Godzilla” and/or “Kong” film would look like? Is it finally just a cartoon at that point? Maybe we’ll get to find out eventually, if Adam Wingard continues to make MonsterVerse films.
