'Birds Of Prey' Teaser: Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Returns With Her Own Gang Of Badass Ladies

Filming is probably just beginning, but it would appear that the folks behind the upcoming “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” would like fans to start getting hyped. While it doesn’t show anything in the way of plot, Warner Bros. has released a first look at the film, and it’s myriad of new DC characters.

As you might expect, the first teaser for ‘Birds of Prey’ is heavy on the Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie is clearly the center of this upcoming DCEU team-up film. But that doesn’t mean the rest of the titular team are left in the cold. Fans will also get a first look at Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco).

Judging just from the quick glimpses, it looks as though director Cathy Yan is forgoing the classic comic book incarnations of the characters, in favor of something a bit more realistic. Huntress doesn’t have a flashy purple costume with a mask, instead rocking a hood. Although she still carries a crossbow. Canary isn’t seen much, but we’re thinking they’re going to shy away from using the character’s iconic fishnet stockings. And the most changed would be Cassandra Cain, who in the comics is a former Batgirl and skilled fighter. In the clip, she’s seen as young, in a typical hoodie, and sporting a pink cast.

But really, the big story here isn’t the reveal of the characters, it’s the style of the video, which points to something entirely different than what we’ve seen in the DCEU, and particularly Harley Quinn’s first appearance in “Suicide Squad.” And that can only be a good thing, as ‘Squad’ was absolutely terrible and the DCEU seems to be finding its footing thanks to Zack Snyder’s lack of influence and strong outings from “Aquaman” and “Wonder Woman.”

“Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” hits theaters on February 7, 2020.
