Black Panther, A Star is Born, Barry top 2019 PGA Awards Nominations

The Producers Guild of America announced the 2019 PGA Awards nominations this morning and, as always, there were some notable snubs and surprises.

The Theatrical category went very populist with “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “A Quiet Place,” “Roma,” “A Star is Born” and “Vice.”  Notable snubs included potential Best Picture nominees “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Mary Poppins Returns.”  It’s worth noting last year that four of the 10 nominees did not earn eventual Best Picture nominations.  In 2017 only one film didn’t make Oscar’s usual nine nominees, in 2016 three were PGA nominees only and in 2015 three also didn’t make the Best Picture cut.  That’s likely good news for the “Beale” team who will have to sweat it out the next few weeks.

Still, it’s worth noting that “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Crazy Rich Asians” both have PGA and SAG ensemble nominations.  There is very strong guild support with both titles.

There were few surprises in the animated film category as studio productions continued to rule the day.  “The Grinch,” “Incredibles 2,” “Isle of Dogs,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” all earned nominations.

On the television side, the Drama category featured “The Americans,” “Better Call Saul,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Ozark” and “This is Us.”  Newcomers “Pose” and “Homecoming” were snubbed.  The Comedy category was arguably the least controversial of any PGA Award category this year with “Barry,” “The Good Place,” “Atlanta,” “GLOW” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

Among other categories, Emmy winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race” earned its first PGA award nomination in the Competition Television category.
