'Blade Runner 2049' & Meditating On The Future And The Past [Podcast]

Welcome to another edition of The Playlist Podcast, a discussion about film news and other film and television related items.

On this episode, I’m joined by Playlist Editor-in-Chief Rodrigo Perez and Adjust Your Tracking co-host Erik McClanahan to discuss the movie that is on everyone’s mind this week, and one of the most anticipated films of the year: “Blade Runner 2049.”

We start the discussion off with some reflection on Ridley Scott‘s original 1982 film (and which of the 94 different cuts you should watch). While we all have varying opinions as to whether or not the film has earned its status as a “masterpiece,” we all agree that it’s a massively influential film, one that has surrounded itself with a myth almost larger than the movie itself.

From there, we first get into our spoiler-free thoughts on Denis Villeneuve’s decades-later sequel, and whether or not it lives up to the impossible standard that has been set by its predecessor. At the “22:57” mark, we dive into a ***MAJOR SPOILER DISCUSSION*** about the film. We wholeheartedly believe that everyone should go into the film as cold as possible, and we want to preserve that experience. Everything we discuss up until the “22:57” mark is both vague and thoughtful, but after “22:57“, all bets are off, and we recommend waiting to listen to the back half after you have seen the film.
