Brian De Palma Is Writing A New Film Based On The Harvey Weinstein Scandal

Apparently, filmmaker Brian De Palma is not happy with Hollywood and the film industry. After an incredibly productive ‘70s and ‘80s, the director of films like “Scarface,” “Carrie,” and “The Untouchables” has slowed down his productivity in recent years. Having released only one film in the last decade, there has to be a reason why De Palma hasn’t been as prolific. And according to the filmmaker, there’s a good reason – Hollywood has changed.

In a new interview with French outlet Le Parisien, De Palma talks about his frustrations with the current state of the film industry and how his next feature film, a horror film, will feature a character based on one of the most controversial figures in Hollywood.

Even though De Palma hasn’t been as productive recently, as in decades past, the filmmaker does have a new film coming out this year, and already has his next film lined up. He’s currently writing a horror film based on the recent controversy surrounding Harvey Weinstein.

“I’m writing a film about this scandal, a project I’m talking about with a French producer. My character won’t be named Harvey Weinstein but it will be a horror film, with a sexual aggressor, and it will take place in the film industry,” explained De Palma.

A Brian De Palma horror film with the antagonist being Harvey Weinstein is something you would have never predicted but sounds absolutely amazing. But before then, we’re going to see his latest film, “Domino” released sometime this year…maybe.

The filmmaker describes working on “Domino,” which stars “Game of Thrones” alums Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Carice van Houten, along with Guy Pearce, as a “horrible experience.” De Palma says the film was underfunded, the producer lied to him, and some of his staff never got paid. Ultimately, the director isn’t sure the film will ever see the light of day.

The main crux of the interview is that all this leads the acclaimed director to be frustrated with the state of Hollywood. He opines over the influx of Dinosaur and superhero movies, and says that it’s impossible to make “serious” movies anymore. De Palma explains that he had to step away from big studio movies because of the big studio machines.

Naturally, the interviewer asked the director if he’d be interested in working with Netflix, which is famous for giving almost complete freedom to the filmmaker. He said, “Yes, but I need a big screen…”

So, for now, don’t expect De Palma to follow in Scorsese’s footsteps.
