'Captain America 4' Movie In The Works With 'Falcon & Winter Soldier' Showrunner Malcolm Spellman

Having mixed feelings about Disney+‘s “The Falcon And The Winter Solider” for any reason? Well, Marvel and Kevin Feige don’t share that view if you do. The series just ended today, but Marvel Studios is already planning a continuation of “The Falcon And Winter Soldier” story in a “Captain America 4.” What’s more, in a big vote of confidence, they’re retapping Malcolm Spellman, the showrunner and head writer of ‘Falcon & Winter Solider’ to write and develop the movie.

So if you watched the finale of “The Falcon And Winter Soldier” today, you know Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), finally put away his reservations and donned the new Captain America outfit, fitted with Falcon wings, courtesy of Wakandan tech. Wilson is the new Captain America, and even at the end, the show in the titles dubbed itself “Captain American And Winter Soldier.” And maybe that was a nod to today’s news, the story continuing in the movies.

According to THR, Spellman will pen the script with Dalan Musson, a staff writer on the Disney+ Marvel series. Musson wrote episode five, “The Truth,” which is arguably the best episode of the series (it certainly is, in my estimation). No casting or details have been offered, but Friday’s finale, “One World, One People,” certainly sets the table for several avenues the stories could go. Furthermore, the news seems to be building onto the promise Kevin Feige made of developing characters we haven’t spent much time on the small screen and then elevate them to a high stakes movie. Marvel is definitely putting their money where their mouth is there in that regard.

Some places it could go: Obviously including Bucky, The Winter Soldier again (Sebastian Stan), or Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), Wilson’s military aide in the series who is left with Falcon’s damaged wings in the end, and in the comics, eventually takes up the mantle of The Falcon after Wilson moves on to being Cap. Then, of course, the series finale teased a lot of unfinished business with Sharon Carter (Emily Van Camp), who the U.S. government fully pardoned, but was also revealed to be something of a double agent, working for or with someone else, and looking at the absolution as a way to exploit intel about U.S. tech.

“The Falcon & The Winter Solider” series also teased the building of a new team, perhaps the Thunderbolts or Dark Avengers, including U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), so a big-screen battle against a new, more-mercenary team could make for a big event movie.

Recent trade reports said Chris Evans was also making a deal to return as Captain America— likely through some multiverse shenanigans now that the idea has been introduced–but both Evans and Feige recently quashed those rumors. We shall see what happens, but right now feels like the time for Mackie to shine as the new Cap (Update: Deadline adds, if there is a new Chris Evans Cap project, it would be separate).

No director is currently attached, but one has to wonder if ‘TF&WS’ series helmer Kari Skogland is being considered again. “The Falcon And Winter Soldier” series premiered March 19, to what Disney+ said was its biggest series debut ever, topping even the likes of popular shows like Marvel’s “WandaVision” and Lucasfilm’s “The Mandalorian.”
