'The Chaperone' Trailer: Haley Lu Richardson Stars In New Film From The Writer & The Director Of 'Downton Abbey'

“From the writer and director of ‘Downton Abbey’” would normally be all that’s required to sell a film to a general audience. However, in the case of the upcoming film “The Chaperone,” not only do you have a writer and a director from the upcoming “Downton Abbey” film and acclaimed TV series, but you also have a great cast, including one of the more interesting up and coming actresses today.

“The Chaperone” features Haley Lu Richardson as an aspiring dancer that dreams of going to the big city and exploring her career in the arts. She’s joined by the titular chaperone, who would like to not only bring the young lady to the big city, but also use the time to explore her past.

As mentioned, Richardson is one of the biggest up and coming names in Hollywood right now, with a great filmography, including last year’s underrated “Support the Girls.” She’s starting to get her own starring roles now, so it’ll be interesting to see how far she climbs up the ranks in 2019.

The film comes from the mind of Julian Fellowes, the writer and creator of the hit TV series, “Downton Abbey.” And Fellowes has brought director Michael Engler along for the ride. Engler is also a “Downton Abbey” alum, who has recently helmed the big-screen spin-off.

“The Chaperone” stars Richardson, Elizabeth McGovern, Campbell Scott, Victoria Hill, Geza Rohrig, Miranda Otto, Robert Fairchild, and Blythe Danner.

“The Chaperone” hits NYC on March 29 and LA on April 5 before beginning its nationwide expansion.

Here’s the synopsis:

Louise Brooks, the 1920s silver screen sensation who never met a rule she didn’t break, epitomized the restless, reckless spirit of the Jazz Age. But, just a few years earlier, she was a 15-year-old student in Wichita, Kansas for whom fame and fortune were only dreams. When the opportunity arises for her to go to New York to study with a leading dance troupe, her mother insists there be a chaperone. Norma Carlisle (Elizabeth McGovern), a local society matron who never broke a rule in her life, impulsively volunteers to accompany Louise (Haley Lu Richardson) to New York for the summer. Why does this utterly conventional woman do this? What happens to her when she lands in Manhattan with an unusually rebellious teenager as her ward? And, which of the two women is stronger, the uptight wife-and-mother or the irrepressible free spirit? It’s a story full of surprises—about who these women really are, and who they eventually become.
