'American Psycho' Cast Secretly Thought Christian Bale Was "The Worst Actor They'd Ever Seen"

For many film fans, Christian Bale is considered part of the upper echelon of actors working today. Not only is he just a great performer, but he’s also someone that is willing to do just about anything physically possible to add to the film, whether that’s losing a bunch of weight, gain a bunch of weight, wear prosthetics, etc… And for “American Psycho,” Bale was able to not only give a great performance but also look exactly as Patrick Bateman should, in all his douchey, ridiculous glory.

However, according to Bale, he recently found out that pretty much everyone on the set of “American Psycho” was not convinced by his skill. In fact, they thought he was horrible. Speaking to Movie Maker, Bale talked about how fellow actor Josh Lucas, who co-starred with him in “American Psycho,” recently told him that the other actors on set thought he was the worst.

“Josh Lucas and I did a film together recently and he opened my eyes to something that I had been unaware of,” Bale said. “He informed me that all of the other actors thought that I was the worst actor they’d ever seen.”

He added, “He was telling me they kept looking at me and talking about me, saying, ‘Why did Mary [Harron, director] fight for this guy? He’s terrible.’ And it wasn’t until he saw the film that he changed his mind. And I was in the dark completely about that critique.”

Obviously, in hindsight, everyone can have a laugh about how silly and naive everyone was for doubting the performance of Bale in “American Psycho.” Though the film does have its problems, there are many that love the film, particularly due to Bale’s performance. It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the role of Patrick Bateman.
