Colin Trevorrow Calls 'Dominion' The "Culmination" Of The Entire 'Jurassic Park' Franchise

Next year, “Jurassic World: Dominion” is set to be released worldwide and act as the end of the second trilogy of ‘Jurassic Park’ films. And it also marks the return of Colin Trevorrow to the director’s chair after letting J.A. Bayona take over for ‘Fallen Kingdom.’ This sort of director changeover, where the middle chapter is helmed by someone different, might bring to mind another recent trilogy over in the “Star Wars” franchise. And much like ‘Rise of Skywalker,’ the upcoming ‘Dominion’ has ambitions on closing out an entire series of films, not just the two before it.

Speaking to EW, Trevorrow was asked about coming back to the ‘Jurassic World’ franchise to cap it off with ‘Dominion,’ and the filmmaker explained what motivated him to return for another round with the dinosaurs and what’s so special about the final film in this new trilogy.

“Honestly, it’s because I love it,” Trevorrow said about his return to the franchise. “I don’t really have a better answer than that. I’ve been very fortunate to be involved in a lot of different kinds of stories, and after working with J.A. on the last film, that was inspiring for me in its own way, to see how another filmmaker interpreted that middle chapter of the story. I was genuinely moved by the experience. I was going through a tough time myself. So to dive back into this world of dinosaurs with another filmmaker and make something we believed in, it made me want to finish what we started.”

Of course, as we already know, ‘Dominion’ sees the return of the primary triad of actors from the original “Jurassic Park,” Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum, to help out the latest stars, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, fight dinosaurs one more time. And as the filmmaker explained, ‘Dominion’ isn’t just the end of the ‘Jurassic World’ films, but it presents a conclusion for the original ‘Park’ films from decades ago.

“To me, [‘Dominion’] is a culmination of one story that’s been told,” said Trevorrow. “When you got to the end of the ‘Jurassic Park’ trilogy, it may not have been as clear in what the complete story of those three movies was because they were a bit more episodic in the way that they were approached. But this trilogy is not that way. It’s very much a serialized story.”

He added, “What was important for me was, when you watch ‘Dominion,’ you really feel like you are learning how much of a story that first set of movies was and how everything that happened in those movies actually informs what ultimately is able to happen in this. If kids who are born today are going to be presented with six ‘Jurassic Park’ movies — you hope the parents will buy them the box set — you hope they are going to get to feel like they watch one long story.”

“Jurassic World: Dominion” is expected to debut in theaters on June 10, 2022.
