What’s Darren Aronofsky have in mind for his next picture after this year’s “Caught Stealing“? Deadline reports that it’ll be something a bit out of pocket for the director: a team-up with “Gone Girl” novelist Gillian Flynn for an erotic thriller, based on an original idea the two cooked up together.
Sony Pictures will produce the film, with Flynn penning the script, and Aronofsky also producing via his Protozoa Pictures banner. Andrew Mittman also produces via 1.21, the banner behind projects like Netflix‘s “Tuesday,” Baz Luhrmann‘s “Elvis,” and the horror pic, “Together.” Kai Dolbashian and Darby Kealey are also on board as executive producers. As for official plot details? Those are under wraps for now, but expect something in line with Flynn’s previously adapted work, like “Gone Girl,” “Sharp Objects,” and “Dark Places.”
Does this news mean that Aronofsky is no longer attached to direct Dwayne Johnson in “Breakthrough” over at A24? Maybe, maybe not. Aronofsky could fast-track this project, or he could just as easily helm “Breakthrough” or his “Cujo” remake over at Netflix next. Elsewhere, Aronofsky will also produce the upcoming horror film “Pendulum,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Phoebe Dynevor, and Norman Reedus.
As for Flynn, David Fincher‘s 2014 adaptation of “Gone Girl” may remain her biggest onscreen work, but she’s stayed busy in Hollywood since then. Along with the previously mentioned adaptations of her work, she also co-wrote 2018’s “Widows” with Steven McQueen, and also pens Tim Burton‘s upcoming “Attack Of The Fifty Foot Woman“ over at Warner Bros.
Is Aronofsky a sound directorial choice for an erotic thriller? The guy who made films like “Requiem For A Dream” and “Black Swan” should be capable enough to do the genre justice, but this still feels like a strange hit for Aronofsky. Maybe this project becomes more of a sure thing after plot details emerge.
