Paramount Dates 'G.I. Joe,' 'Micronauts' And 'Dungeons & Dragons'

If you need any further indication that something like Alex Garland‘s brainy “Annihilation” isn’t the right fit for Paramount (they recently sold off the international rights to the movie to Netflix), just take a look at the next three movies they’ve throw on the calendar.

The “long-awaited” (lol, Deadline) third “G.I. Joe” movie will drop in cinemas on March 27, 2020. By time it lands in multiplexes, it will have been a lengthy seven years since “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” and yep, it will be a reboot, coming with “a more millennial approach” (double lol).

“The world has changed, and I think you’re going to see G.I. Joe changing with it,” Hasbro exec Simon Waters said last spring. “There’s going to be a much more contemporary approach to the whole franchise, and that will allow us to develop different characters.” Long story short, they’re scrapping the middling preceding movies and starting over.

#TeamHasbro is also working on “Micronauts,” which will land on October 16, 2020. Over a year ago, it was announced that Pulitzer Prize winning author Michael Chabon (whose film credits include “Wonder Boys,” “Spider-Man 2” and uh, “John Carter“), acclaimed comic book and TV writer Brian K. Vaughan (“Lost,” “Under The Dome“), Nicole Perlman (“Guardians Of The Galaxy,” “Captain Marvel“), John Francis Daleyand Jonathan Goldstein (“Spider-Man: Homecoming“), “Luke Cage” showrunner Cheo CokerJeff Pinkner (“The Dark Tower“), Geneva Robertson (“Tomb Raider” reboot), Joe Robert Cole (“Black Panther“), Lindsey Beer, and Nicole Riegel were all being convened for a cinematic universe (good lord), that would included the toys G.I. Joe, Micronauts, Visionairies, M.A.S.K., and ROM. So I would presume these new “G.I. Joe” and  “Micronauts” will help launch that.

Lastly, tell your table top buds that “Dungeons & Dragons” is coming on July 23, 2021. Presumably, this is not from the script Joe Manganiello wrote, but is perhaps the project that had “Baby Driver” star Ansel Elgort eyed to lead,  to be directed by “Goosebumps” helmer Rob Letterman from a script by “The Conjuring 2” scribe David Leslie Johnson. But, we’re still a long way off, so who knows what might change in the development process.

All this to say, Paramount’s future, like every studio around town, is very brand forward.
