David Gordon Green Tapped To Direct 'Exorcist' Sequel From Blumhouse

Three years ago, who would have thought that David Gordon Green would go from being the guy who directed episodes of “Red Oaks” and “Eastbound & Down,” as well as films like “Pineapple Express” and “Your Highness,” to one of the biggest names in horror. But then he combined with Blumhouse and released “Halloween” in 2018 and is finishing up two more sequels in that franchise, as well as developing a series remake of “Hellraiser.” And now, to top it all off, it appears like he might be tackling one of the biggest horror films of all-time, “The Exorcist.”

According to Observer, David Gordon Green has been tapped to direct a sequel to “The Exorcist,” produced by Blumhouse and Morgan Creek. Not much is known about the film other than it will be the latest sequel to one of the most classic films of all time and that the original film’s director, William Friedkin, will not be involved.

Now, it would make sense if film fans read this news and get a little upset. Why would Blumhouse and Morgan Creek dare try to make a new ‘Exorcist’ film? However, when you take into consideration that “Halloween” was a really quality entry in a franchise that had seemingly sputtered out (and the sequels are being hyped up as even better), Green has positioned himself as a filmmaker that can take franchises that have lost their momentum and inject some life back into them. And let’s be real, there have already been quite a few attempts at ‘Exorcist’ sequels and prequels and none of them can even hold a candle to the original, which is a similar situation as what Green inherited with “Halloween.”

That said, we also have Blumhouse attached, so that could go either way. For every “Halloween,” “Get Out,” and “Invisible Man” that the production company produces, there’s a “Fantasy Island,” “Truth or Dare,” or “The Hunt.” That is to say, Blumhouse’s track record is prolific but not always consistent.

There’s no word on when production might begin on “The Exorcist” sequel. As mentioned, Green has his schedule pretty full with the ‘Halloween’ sequels, the “Hellraiser” series, a new film about Cambridge Analytica, and even a “Smokey & the Bandit” TV series. Of course, we know that Blumhouse loves to get things filmed quickly, so maybe ‘Exorcist’ is being fast-tracked. We’ll just have to wait and see.
