With lots of chatter surrounding “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” “Suicide Squad,” and even “The Flash,” which isn’t due in cinemas until 2018, there has been a notable silence around “Wonder Woman” which is supposed to arrive in 2017. And that’s even with Gal Gadot suited up and ready to roll in the movie, with her character due for a tease in ‘Dawn Of Justice.’ And things just got a bit more curious.
THR reports that Emmy-award-winning filmmaker Michelle MacLaren (“Breaking Bad,” “Game Of Thrones,” “The Leftovers,” “The Walking Dead“), who landed the job last fall, has now exited the project. Good ol’ “creative differences” are being cited for this one, but those exact details aren’t being given.
It’s definitely a blow to Warner Bros. who were specifically eyeing a female director for the job, and certainly landed an accomplished talent. It should be noted that “Wonder Woman” is still without a script, with Warner Bros. using their approach of having multiple writers working on separate drafts and picking the best one. MacLaren had apparently been involved in that process.
All that said, this isn’t quite a crisis. Presumably production wouldn’t begin on this film until next year, so the studio has time to fill the void. But it’s not the kind of press you want attached to a project early on. “Wonder Woman” is still due (for now) on June 23, 2017.
