Duncan Jones To Continue His 'Moon' & 'Mute' Series With A Graphic Novel Titled ‘Madi’

Though the films don’t necessarily have as many connections as you might expect from a film franchise, Duncan Jones’ features, “Moon” and “Mute,” do take place in the same sci-fi world and are part of a larger story. Unfortunately, though “Moon” (starring Sam Rockwell) was a critical success, 2018’s “Mute” (which stars Alexander Skarsgård and Paul Rudd) wasn’t warmly received by critics and fans when it hit Netflix. So to continue the franchise set forth in those two films, it appears that Jones has turned to the realm of comic books.

The filmmaker is currently looking for donations for a Kickstarter to help fund a graphic novel based on his script for an unproduced film that is set in the universe created in “Moon” and “Mute.” The graphic novel is titled “Madi: Once Upon A Time In The Future” and he’s set to work with writer Alex De Campi and a number of artists to help bring the story to life.

Here’s the synopsis of the graphic novel from the Kickstarter page:

Madi Preston, a veteran of Britain’s elite special operations J-Squad unit, is burnt out and up to her eyeballs in debt. She and the rest of her team have retired from the military but are now trapped having to pay to service and maintain the technology put into them during their years of service. They’re working for British conglomerate Liberty Inc as mercenaries, selling their unique ability to be remote controlled by specialists while in the field, and the debts are only growing as they get injured completing missions. We meet Madi as she decides she’s had enough. She will take an off-the-books job that should earn her enough to pay out her and her sister, but when the piece of tech she’s supposed to steal turns out to be a kid, and she suddenly blacks out… she finds herself on the run from everyone she’s ever known.

The structure of “Madi” is actually different than you might expect from a graphic novel. The 260-page book will be written by Jones and De Campi but each of the artists that are signed to do work on the project will take their own 30-page chunk to adapt. And since the story follows a road trip, each artist’s section handles one separate location.

Unlike many other Kickstarters, “Madi” doesn’t have nearly the risks associated with it. According to the campaign, most of the art is already finished and unless there are unforeseen delays with printing, the book should be delivered by November. So, if you’re interested in helping it happen, you can visit the campaign and donate today.
