Eli Roth To Direct A Film Adaptation Of The 'Borderlands' Video Game Series

To say that Eli Roth’s films are hit or miss is a bit of an understatement. “Cabin Fever” is definitely an above-average horror film. And the first “Hostel,” though it spawned countless terrible imitations, is held in high regard by many who enjoy that sort of gory film. But recently, films like “Death Wish” and “Green Inferno” haven’t been the greatest examples of quality filmmaking. That’s what gives us tepid excitement for the announcement that Roth is going to be helming “Borderlands.”

According to Variety, Lionsgate has hired Roth to direct the film adaptation of the popular video game series, “Borderlands.” And if you haven’t played “Borderlands” before, it’s sort of a post-apocalyptic, sci-fi shoot ‘em up that is known for its whacky, wild characters and it’s incredibly garish design. If that doesn’t sound like a project specifically suited for Eli Roth, then we don’t know what is.

“I’m so excited to dive into the world of ‘Borderlands’ and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio,” Roth said. “I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate – I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition. I look forward to bringing my own energy, ideas, and vision to the wild, fun, and endlessly creative world of the game.”

Giving us a bit of hope is the fact that the most recent script for the film is written by Craig Mazin, who everyone probably knows now as the creator and writer of HBO’s acclaimed series “Chernobyl.” But even though that’s his most recent project, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that before that, he was probably best known for films such as “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” and the two ‘Hangover’ sequels.

Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, added, “With Eli’s vision and Craig’s screenplay, we believe we have cracked the code on bringing the anarchic world of ‘Borderlands’ to the big screen in a big way that will be a fresh, compelling and cinematic event for moviegoers and fans of the game.”

“Borderlands” has been in development for years now, but it seems as if now is the time the film will actually get into production. No release date has been announced.
