'Red Queen': Elizabeth Banks To Direct & Star In A New Peacock Series About A Superpowered Monarchy

Watching all the drama unfold with the British monarchy shows that the US is probably better served by not having a Queen and all that it involves. Of course, cynically, you can point to our celebrity-obsessed culture and show that maybe it’s not all that different than having a real monarchy. But I digress. Elizabeth Banks is aiming to show the ramifications of a US monarchy (with a superpowered twist) in the upcoming Peacock series, “Red Queen.”

According to THR, Elizabeth Banks is set to produce, direct, and star in a new series “Red Queen,” that is in development over at Peacock. The series is adapted from the novel of the same name from author Victoria Aveyard and tells the story of an alternate history America that has replaced democracy with a monarchy that is run by superpowered individuals. “Red Queen” follows a young girl born in poverty that finds out she has superpowers and becomes the leader of the revolution against the rulers.

As mentioned, Banks is set to executive produce the series but will also star in a supporting role and will direct the pilot episode. She’s working alongside Beth Schwartz, who will also produce and will co-write the series alongside author Aveyard. Schwartz is probably best known for her work on the CW series “Arrow” as well as the upcoming Netflix show, “Sweet Tooth.”

Banks is a very busy lady, as she is currently attached to a number of projects, both in front of and behind the camera. Her name has been mentioned as the director of a new “Invisible Woman” film for Universal (based on the horror character, not the superhero). She’s also attached to direct the film, “Cocaine Bear,” for producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. And she’s set to star in a film titled “Call Jane.”

It’s unclear when production will begin on “Red Queen” or when we might see it debut on Peacock.
