Emmys Push Voting Calendar But Awards Still On Track

Days after the Golden Globes announced a coronavirus exception for their 2021 awards, the Television Academy has made some changes to its own qualifying calendar in the wake of the global pandemic. The 72nd Primetime Emmys are still scheduled for September 20, 2020. Almost everything else has a new timeframe.

The entry deadline for nominees is now set for June 2. It was previously May 11.

The Academy has extended the deadline for “hanging” episodes of a program’s season to June 30. It was previously May 31.

Nomination voting will now take place from July 2-July 13. It was previously scheduled for June 15-29. The new period for members to cast their ballots has been cut by three days.

Emmy nominations will now be announced on July 23. They were previously set to be revealed on July 14.

Phase two voting for the Emmy winners will run from August 21- August 31. The new calendar snips four days for final voting as it was originally set to begin on August 17.

The Television Academy has also decided that “all Television Academy For Your Consideration Events – whether with a live audience, streaming or recorded for posting on a viewing platform — have been suspended for this Emmy season.” Whether this will change in the weeks and months ahead if the status of the epidemic changes, remains to be seen.

Again, the Primetime Emmy Awards remain set for Sept. 20 and the Creative Emmy Awards ceremonies will also be held as scheduled on Sept. 12 and 13. The organization noted, “There are no current plans to cancel or delay the September 20 Emmy telecast or the September 12 and 13 Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies. As national and statewide directives and mandates on the COVID-19 pandemic remain fluid, the Television Academy and broadcast partner ABC will monitor recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the L.A. County Department of Public Health.”
