'Fatman' Trailer: Mel Gibson Is Rambo Santa In This Bonkers Christmas Action-Comedy

Oh, boy. Where to begin. So, there’s this trailer for “Fatman.” And before I get to talking about what it is and why it might be the most ludicrous piece of filmmaking I’ve seen in a long while, you really should just skip to the bottom and watch it cold. I’ll wait…

Okay, back?

As you have no doubt seen from the trailer, “Fatman” tells the story of a hitman hired by a spoiled brat to kill Santa Claus. That’s ridiculous enough. But the fact that Santa is played by Mel Gibson, doing his best “Sylvester Stallone in the most recent ‘Rambo’ film curmudgeonly old man,” just makes this film over-the-top nutso.

The first half of the trailer feels like an ‘SNL’ film parody for a Santa Claus movie that no one asked for and would likely ruin the holiday spirit for just about anyone who watches it. Do we really need a film about Santa being hired by the government for a Black Ops mission of some kind? Sure, the scene with the elves talking to soldiers at the cafeteria is some inspired creativity, but it’s just…wow.

But just when you think the film couldn’t go anymore off the rails, the real story kicks in where a young boy is given coal and vows deadly revenge on Santa. And what’s a kid to do when he’s given coal by the “Fatman?” Well, naturally, you call up Walton Goggins and hire him to serve up Santa’s head on a platter. It’s the Christmas spirit, folks!

Honestly, you have to hand it to writer-directors Eshom Nelms and Ian Nelms for getting the financing for this film and somehow landing people like Gibson and Goggins. For those people out there complaining about too many superhero films and not enough “original ideas,” here you go! Happy now? You caused this!

“Fatman” is set to arrive in select theaters on November 13 before hitting VOD on November 17. You can watch the trailer below. And though I am obviously not the biggest fan of the concept and execution, this is clearly a trailer that demands your attention.
