First Look: Jennifer Lawrence In Darren Aronofsky's 'mother!'

The marketing campaign for “mother!” has been all about the art of the tease. The film hits the festival circuit and opens in theaters nationwide in a matter of weeks, yet so far, Paramount has played coy about the new film, even though it’s directed by Darren Aronofsky and stars Jennifer Lawrence. Even as the first trailer landed, there were no official stills, and many sites were left to ponder the wild images that burst through the promo. Well, now we have at least one real shot from the movie to puzzle over.

 Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer, all co-star in the movie, and what we know so far is simply the logline: A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. So what is it about? Even Aronofsky is still “figuring it out!” as he told EW.

“I was always jealous of singer-songwriters who can pop out a song in a couple of days or a few hours,” he said. “I had this idea, and I felt it rise up in my head. I took a long weekend and got into this fever dream and just pumped it out. [Laughs] We’ll see what the results are. It’s been an interesting way to approach it — trying to capture a single emotion and trying to tell that two hour story out of that emotion.”

“It is closer to ‘Black Swan‘ in spirit than anything I have done in a while,” he teased.
