'Glass' First Look Images Show Samuel L. Jackson Still Loves His Purple Outfits

Next year is going to start with a box office bang, as filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan launches the third film in his “Unbreakable” trilogy, “Glass.” Fans of “Unbreakable” have been waiting almost 20 years for a true sequel to the film, and with last year’s “Split,” fans got the promise of a major crossover event that they’ve been clamoring for. And thanks to EW, we have the first look at Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, and more from “Glass.”

Shyamalan’s plan for the “Unbreakable” shared universe was something he had planned for a while, but he knew it wasn’t a guarantee. Even when he signed James McAvoy to star in “Split,” the idea of “Glass” coming to fruition was still just a dream.

“We were chatting and he said, ‘Well, maybe if this one does well, we’ll do another one,’” McAvoy said. “I was like, ‘Really? We’re going to do a sequel to Split?’ He was like, ‘Yeah, you know, bring back David and all that.’ And I was like, David?”

That’s when the lightbulb went off in McAvoy’s head and he realized that this was all part of some sort of M. Night Shyamalan master plan. He said, “Oh, wait a minute…”

But don’t go thinking that McAvoy’s character is going to play second-fiddle to Willis and Jackson. We’re still going to learn more about the multiple personalities living inside McAvoy’s Kevin. “We get to spend some time with some new people that live inside Kevin,” McAvoy said.

However, the big names of McAvoy, Willis, Jackson, and “Split” returnee Anya Taylor-Joy aren’t the only familiar faces we’ll see in “Glass.” Spencer Treat Clark, who played David Dunn’s son in “Unbreakable,” is returning, along with Charlayne Woodard, who plays Glass’ mother. “[They] play a big role,” Shyamalan said.

The big new face to the franchise is actress Sarah Paulson. She plays a doctor tasked with trying to figure out what’s going on with the trio of Willis, McAvoy, and Jackson. “She deals with people that think they’re comic-book characters,” Shyamalan said. “It’s kind of the modern-day equivalent of ‘I think I’m Jesus’ or ‘I’m an emperor.’”

We don’t have to wait too long until we see how Shyamalan ties everything together. “Glass” is scheduled to hit theaters January 18, 2019.
