Greta Gerwig & Noah Baumbach To Write Margot Robbie's 'Barbie' Film With Gerwig Potentially Directing

The idea of a “Barbie” film has been percolating in Hollywood for years. Decades even. But most recently, the idea has been gaining steam with actresses like Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway attached to star at different points, with Diablo Cody sought out to help write it at one point. But then, earlier this year, it was announced that Margot Robbie was the latest actress to take the role. And now, it appears that we know the creative minds that are going to bring the plastic doll to life.

According to Variety, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are signed on to co-write the script for the upcoming “Barbie” film starring Robbie. And as if that wasn’t interesting enough, it appears that Warner Bros. is hoping that Gerwig will want to stay on and direct the film when the time comes. That’s right, two indie powerhouses are a step away from crafting a “Barbie” film. This is equally amazing and confusing, all at once.

Of course, Gerwig and Baumbach are partners in real-life, as well, so the idea of these two creative forces teaming up isn’t completely out of character. In fact, the duo has previously worked on scripts for the acclaimed “Frances Ha” and “Mistress America.” Now, it looks like combined forces of Gerwig and Baumbach are WB’s latest hope of bringing a “Barbie” film to theaters.

Gerwig is currently wrapping up work on her sophomore directorial feature “Little Women,” which has a ton of awards season buzz and is likely going to position the filmmaker as an even bigger force than she was after her debut feature “Lady Bird.” So, this could be just the latest step in the evolution of Gerwig as one of Hollywood’s biggest directors.

Baumbach is currently working on his upcoming Netflix film starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, which is expected to land on the streaming service this fall.
