Sinking Our Teeth Into 'Crawl' & Our Favorite Animal Attack Horror Films [The Discourse Podcast]

In 1975, “Jaws” assured moviegoers that it wasn’t safe to go into the water. 44 years later, that sentiment still remains. Fortunately, it is still safe to podcast, so you’re stuck with another edition of The Discourse, the show where we discuss film and television news, reviews, and any other pertinent pop culture items worth weighing-in on.

On this episode, I’m joined by Meagan Navarro (Bloody Disgusting, Consequence of Sound), and in the first half of the episode, we dive into “Crawl,” the latest film from director Alexandre Aja (“High Tension,” “The Hills Have Eyes“) and producer Sam Raimi. The tense, well-received horror-thriller about an alligator attack in a crawl space during a category 5 hurricane was suspiciously withheld from most critics, which is where our discussion begins. While it has its faults, we both come down positive on the film – praising Aja’s direction and the two lead performances from Kayla Scodelario and Barry Pepper – and ponder what the strategy was in withholding a well-executed crowdpleaser from the press.

On the second half of the episode, we each dive into our five favorite animal attack horror movies, in which there is no shortage of options, ranging from beloved classics to complete schlock, and everything in between. It was decided before recording that we would not include “Jaws,” as it is such a given, but there is not a single overlap between our lists, resulting in an eclectic mix of animal mayhem (also, be sure to check out Meagan’s piece about “5 Horror Movies to Watch Before ‘Crawl‘”).
