Got a Tip?

‘Insidious 3’ Now In The Works As James Wan Declares He’s Done With Horror

null

Well, this was inevitable. After “Insidious: Chapter 2scored a monster opening this past weekend, the second best in history for the month of September, work is already beginning on a third installment, because franchising is where those sweet dollars are these days. But will James Wan be returning? Because it sure doesn’t sound like he wants to.

“I’m going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. ‘Conjuring‘ and ‘Insidious 2’ are my two last scary movies,” he told Moviefone, adding: “Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you’re know as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I’m a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films.”

Certainly, Wan is getting his shot, currently in midst of shoot “Fast & Furious 7” for next summer, his first megabudget tentpole. And as he told us earlier, he would love to return to his native Australia and “do our version of ‘Swingers‘ or something.” Clearly, the man whose career launched with “Saw” is eager to try and do different things, which is what any filmmaker wants to do, instead of just treading on the same ground over and over.

As for “Insidious 3”? Wan’s name isn’t found near the announcement in Variety, but his pal Leigh Whannel is back to write the next installment. No word yet on if key cast members Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Barbara Hershey will return, but we reckon we’ll find out soon enough. No release date either, but given how cheap and quickly these are made, we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s in cinemas by this time next year.
