HBO has released the trailer for “The Dark Wizard,” a four-part documentary series about the late Dean Potter, the legendary and often controversial climber, BASE jumper, and highliner whose feats pushed adventure sports to the brink of myth.
Directed by Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen—the duo behind “The Alpinist” and “The Dawn Wall”—the series premieres Tuesday, April 14 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max, with new episodes airing weekly.

“The Dark Wizard” traces Potter’s rise from a gifted Yosemite climber to one of the most influential and polarizing figures in modern outdoor sports. His extraordinary ascents on El Capitan and Half Dome made him a hero in climbing circles. Still, the series also examines the instability, rivalries, and inner turmoil that shaped his life off the wall. As Potter kept chasing greater extremes, that drive eventually pulled him toward BASE jumping and wingsuiting, where his lifelong desire to fly became both his greatest obsession and his most dangerous pursuit.
That tension appears to be the real spine of the series. Potter is framed not just as a fearless athlete, but as a brilliant, tormented figure whose imagination and ambition kept pushing him beyond ordinary limits. The documentary draws on decades of archival footage, personal journals, and interviews with those who knew him best, including Alex Honnold, Jen Rapp, Cedar Wright, Leo Houlding, and others from the climbing community.
With Mortimer and Rosen behind the camera, HBO looks to have another high-stakes sports portrait on its hands—one that is as interested in Potter’s artistry and impact as it is in the cost of living that close to the edge.
