Jai Courtney Describes 'The Suicide Squad' As An Action-Comedy With "A Different Flavor" Than The Original

Jai Courtney has had an eclectic career in Hollywood over the past decade. He’s done everything from failed reboots (“A Good Day to Die Hard”) to failed YA dystopian sci-fi (“Divergent”) to failed sci-fi reboots (“Terminator Genisys”) to failed monster movie remakes (“I, Frankenstein”).

Okay, so maybe he’s attached himself to some stinkers in his time, but not everything he’s been in has ended badly. In fact, his superhero debut, in the film “Suicide Squad” was not only acclaimed for its weirdness (Courtney’s Captain Boomerang is kinda lovably batshit crazy) but the project would also go on to become a box office hit. And now, he’s in the upcoming soft reboot/pseudo-sequel, “The Suicide Squad” (the “the” makes all the difference), directed by James Gunn.

According to a new interview with Variety, he’s really excited about what “The Suicide Squad” has to offer fans and why it’s going to be different under Gunn’s direction.

“I think it’s kind of got a different flavor,” said Courtney. “There’s a whole bunch of new characters. James Gunn has an approach to things that is uniquely his; he pulls a lot of that into the ‘Suicide Squad’ world. And I think that it fits really well, and audiences are going to have a lot of fun with it.”

And in discussing his varied career, as he’s currently promoting his upcoming Netflix drama “Stateless,” the actor mentioned that he enjoys taking part in completely different projects.

“I am lucky that sometimes I’m making these small-budget gritty dramas like “Stateless,” and sometimes I’m out shooting big ridiculous action comedies like ‘Suicide Squad,’” said the actor. “To have feet on both of those trains is a lot of fun — and it also means that I never get tired of it.”

We are still more than a year away from “The Suicide Squad’s” release in August 2021, but judging by all the hype surrounding the film, it appears that Gunn has brought his “Guardians of the Galaxy” flavor to the DCEU, and for fans of that franchise, that’s a good thing to hear.
