James Wan Pitched 'Blade' Reboot To Marvel Studios But Is Fuzzy On The Details

Filmmaker James Wan is known by many film fans as the mastermind behind “The Conjuring” universe. In addition to ‘Conjuring,’ the director has various other quality horror films under his belt. And most recently, the director has ventured outside of the genre to focus on action “Furious 7” and his dip into superhero epics, “Aquaman.” But there was a point in time when his career could have taken a major detour, if his plan to work with Marvel Studios panned out.

According to a new interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Screen Rant), Wan talks about how, after the massive breakout success of the first ‘Conjuring’ film, he went to a pitch meeting with Marvel Studios to reboot one of the biggest horror/superhero franchises, “Blade.”

“Years back, a couple of years back, I think it was right after ‘Conjuring 1’ that I went into a particular studio and told them ‘Hey, I’m a big fan of Blade. Would you guys be interested in rebooting Blade?’” said Wan. “So that was one. Obviously, nothing came out of that! But that was my first intro into looking at potential comic book properties.”

Judging by that timeline, we’re probably looking at 2013 when he had this meeting with Marvel Studios. This would have been after the Disney purchase took effect and “Avengers” become one of the biggest films of all time. With how things ended up working out for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would have been interesting to see where “Blade” would have fit into all that.

Wan continues by trying to remember his idea for the vampire hero, “It was just to kind of talk about it. I didn’t have a full presentation. I did have an idea, I can’t quite remember what it was. That’s how far back it was and I’ve done a lot since then so I can’t quite remember what I had thought of. But I did like it at the time.”

While Wan would eventually make the leap (successfully or not depends on your enjoyment of dumb films) into supehero films with “Aquaman,” it would have been interesting to see his take on “Blade,” considering his horror roots. At this point, it appears we won’t ever know what would have happened.
