Jason Bateman Reuniting With 'Game Night' Writer For Superhero Film 'Superworld'

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: imagine a world where everyone has a superpower, but the one powerless man becomes the only person who can save the world. No, this isn’t a remake of the underrated Disney film “Sky High” or the popular anime “My Hero Academia,” but the plot of the new movie “Superworld” to be directed by Jason Bateman and “Game Night” scribe, Mark Perez.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, and it looks like Warner Bros. has tapped Bateman to direct the script that Perez is set to write, based on a recently released Audible Original audiobook by Gus Krieger. The story is “set in 2038 where every person on the planet has superpowers, except for one man names Ignatius Lohman. Lohman is stuck in a white-collar job while his father is one of the most powerful people on the planet and leader of defense organization Peerless. But Lohman will get his chance to step up when he is forced to face a corporate overlord whose power is neutralizing anyone with a superpower.”

That is a clever premise that sounds quite like the popular “My Hero Academia” show, except there is more than one powerless person on that show. It doesn’t help that THR describes “Superworld” as having tones of “The Incredibles.”

That being said, given the people involved there is reason to be excited about this project. Perez wrote the fantastic sleeper hit “Game Night” which is not only one of the best comedies in recent years, but has one of Bateman’s best performances. Meanwhile, Bateman has become a strong director in recent years, helming episodes of “Ozark” and “The Outsider” which have moodier and darker vibes. It’ll be interesting to see if “Superworld” will lend itself more towards the darkly comedic side than “The Incredibles” comparison.
