Today, we’ve learned that XYZ Films and director Natalie Morales (“Plan B”) have cast Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”) to co-star alongside funny man Glenn Howerton (“BlackBerry,” “A.P. Bio”) in an original comedy called “The Girlfriend.” The pic features a husband with good intentions who ends up hiring an escort to become his wife’s new best friend while she is dealing with a major transition in their life.
Given the creative folks involved, we’re not entirely surprised by the film’s shocking concept. Howerton, the co-developer/co-showrunner of the hit absurdist long-running comedy series “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia,” co-wrote the script with fellow veteran TV comedy writer Rich Appel (“The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” “King of the Hill,” “The Cleveland Show”).

A synopsis for the gestating flick shared with us:
Claire gives up her perfect New York City life and moves to Alabama for her husband Elliot’s (Howerton) dream job. Seeing her isolated, friendless, and unhappy, Elliot does what any loving husband would do: he secretly hires an escort (Fahy) to be her new best friend.
Filming on “The Girlfriend” is set to kick off in late June, with a producing team consisting of Shawn Levy and Dan Levine at 21 Laps Entertainment, along with Jill Howerton and Howerton at their banner Zoe Knife Productions, Appel from Persons Unknown, Guy Danella and Nick Spicer from XYZ Films, Richard Alan Reid from Buzzfeed Studios, and Lee Kim. Also, it will have a group of executive producers, including Josh Kunau, Maxime Cottray, Aram Tertzakian, Andrea Scarso, Timo Argillander, John Straley, R. Wesley Sierk, Gary Farkas, Clement Lepoutre, Olivier Muller, and Bertrand Perrodo. Emily Feher from 21 Laps will have a producing role on the flick as well.
We cannot wait to see who else ends up joining Howerton and Meghann as the rest of the cast of “The Girlfriend” comes together with cameras rolling soon.
