Joe Carnahan's 'The Raid' Remake Is Moving Forward But It's Not A Remake Anymore

Remember that remake of “The Raid from director Joe Carnahan? Well, it’s moving forward. But it’s not exactly a remake of “The Raid” anymore. In fact, it’s now called “Zeno.”

According to a new interview with Collider, Carnahan opened up about the status of his remake of “The Raid.” And while he’s moving forward with the script he co-wrote with Adam G. Simon, but the filmmaker isn’t involved with the rights-holder of “The Raid,” XYZ Films, anymore. Therefore, the remake he had planned is now an original idea called “Zeno” and it sounds as if there are some very specific differences between this new film and Gareth Evans’ modern classic.

If you’ve never seen “The Raid,” the film tells the story of a group of police officers that have to storm an apartment building to take out a crime lord and his lackeys. In Carnahan’s new version, it appears the building is still in the picture, but the story is very different.

“The version that I wrote, they don’t ever intend to actually go in [to the building],” the filmmaker said. “They think that they’re gonna move this guy. So their whole operation is, ‘we’re gonna hit this guy in transit.’ It’s not until they realize, ‘Oh, they’re digging in, they’re not moving, we’ve got to now go in and get him.’ It’s a very, very different script…It’s really, really, really about the brothers.”

While no casting has been announced, the filmmaker said that his production company is in talks with a “big name” for the lead role and they’ve already signed an actor for the villain role, but they won’t announce it yet.

There’s no release date set for “Zeno.” Carnahan expects to shoot “Leo from Toledo” next, which stars Mel Gibson, and then will move onto the action film after.
