'Scarface': Luca Guadagnino To Direct The Remake Written By The Coen Brothers

A new remake of “Scarface” has been in development for years now. The most recent iteration found filmmaker Antoine Fuqua at the helm and possibly Diego Luna in the starring role. But things have changed, quite a bit in fact, and now, Universal has a brand-new filmmaker in mind to bring the crime epic to the big screen—Luca Guadagnino.

According to Deadline, Guadagnino is set to direct the latest remake of “Scarface” for Universal, with the Coen Brothers being the writers of the most recent version of the script. The film is expected to update the story of a low-level criminal’s rise to power and fall from grace. However, whereas the 1932 version of the film took place in Chicago and Brian De Palma’s 1980 film was set in Miami, Guadagnino’s “Scarface” is expected to take place in Los Angeles.

Luca Guadagnino is probably best known for his Oscar-nominated work on the film “Call Me By Your Name.” His most recent film was the remake of the Dario Argento film, “Suspiria,” back in 2018. And if the filmmaker brings the same thought process to “Scarface,” as he did for “Suspiria,” then film fans are most likely in for a film that keeps the spirit of the original while greatly changing quite a bit to tell a new story. In other words, Guadagnino isn’t the type of filmmaker that is content with doing a straight-up remake.

In addition to “Scarface,” the Italian filmmaker is busy developing a number of new projects. He’s finishing up work on a new HBO miniseries that still doesn’t have a release date. Then he’s also attached to a “Lord of the Flies” adaptation, as well as the much-discussed sequel to “Call Me By Your Name,” titled “Find Me.’ Though, the order of projects is still unknown.

So, will Guadagnino succeed in bringing “Scarface” back to the big screen? We’ll have to wait and see. But with the Coens’ script and Guadagnino’s talent, it’s hard not to be excited about the possibilities of this film.
