Lucasfilm Was Going To Show Josh Trank's Boba Fett Spinoff Teaser At Star Wars Celebration 2015

The saga of Josh Trank, 20th Century Fox and “Fantastic Four” doesn’t need to be repeated, but there was definitely a considerable stretch of time in 2015 where many wondered if he would have a career following the bad blood that spilled during the making of the superhero reboot. Indeed, things got so bad that Trank was either fired or left the “Star Wars” spinoff he had brewing at Disney and Lucasfilm that was slated to tell the origin story of everyone’s favorite bounty hunter, Boba Fett. However, what we didn’t know until now is that the project was much further along than previously thought.

EW reports that had things gone more smoothly, Trank’s Boba Fett spinoff would’ve been announced at Star Wars Celebration 2015. In fact, there was even a teaser trailer prepped, but alas, it never saw the light of day (oh man, we’d kill to see that). But the timing does make sense, as the film was previously set to be released in 2018 (Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s Han Solo movie will be coming on that date instead).

The project was set to be penned by Lawrence Kasdan, but it’s not clear if he ever got a script in the can. And as for the fate of the project, last year producer and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy said it’s very much alive.

“It’s still one of the stories that we absolutely want to tell,” she said in August 2015. “There is a lot of innovative technology in and around what it is we’re doing with that story, so for a lot of reasons, we were comfortable postponing that. But we’re definitely still developing it.”

Well, movies are built on hope, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed. As for Trank, he’s landed on his feet, and his next film will be the Tom Hardy-starring gangster flick, “Fonzo.”
