‘Succession’ Director Mark Mylod Replaces Alexander Payne On ‘The Menu,’ Produced By Adam McKay

The end of 2019 was pretty tumultuous for filmmaker Alexander Payne. Just weeks before he was set to direct a feature for Netflix, starring Mads Mikkelsen, the project was scrapped. Then, his film, “The Menu,” starring Emma Stone, ran into developmental issues. Finally, the filmmaker was able to sign on for a new remake of “Babette’s Feast and an HBO series, so things seem to be going well. And now, it appears “The Menu” is back in development, but with an entirely new crew, led by producer Adam McKay.

According to Variety, McKay is set to produce the upcoming feature, “The Menu,” and he’s bringing along filmmaker Mark Mylod to direct the feature. Mylod and McKay have previously worked together on the HBO series, “Succession,” which was co-created by McKay and directed by Mylod. Now, the duo reteam for a film that is described as a “darkly comedic psychological thriller” about a young couple that finds themselves on a remote island to taste the exotic food of an acclaimed chef. “The Menu” is written by Will Tracy and Seth Reiss.

As mentioned, the film was originally set up with Payne set to direct, with Stone attached to star. However, that film eventually fell apart. Now, Mylod takes over with a cast that has yet to be announced. In addition to his work on “Succession,” Mylod has previously helmed episodes of “Game of Thrones,” “Entourage,” and “Shameless.” “The Menu” marks the filmmaker’s return to features for the first time in almost a decade, with his previous work being 2011’s “What’s Your Number?”

It’s too soon to know an expected release date for the Searchlight feature. But with Mylod becoming a creative force with “Succession” and McKay continuing his hot streak with a number of acclaimed films and series, we’re excited to see “The Menu” when it finally hits theaters.
