'Master Gardener': Joel Edgerton & Sigourney Weaver To Star In Paul Schrader's New Film

We haven’t even had the world premiere of his latest film, “The Card Counter,” but it appears that Paul Schrader is ready to move onto his newest project, titled “Master Gardener.”

According to Hanway Films, Paul Schrader is putting together the cast for his new film, “Master Gardener,” and has enlisted talented folks such as Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver to appear. The film is said to follow a dedicated horticulturist (Edgerton) who works on the estate of a wealthy woman (Weaver). But when the woman asks the gardener to tend to her niece, issues from a dark past come back to haunt them. The film is written and directed by Schrader, who has brought on HanWay Films to help find a buyer.

“When the idea first started it was one of my male protagonists but then these two women intervened and it became something more complex and unique,” Schrader said.

HanWay Films MD Gabrielle Stewart added, “Paul Schrader is at the top of his form, and HanWay is excited to be collaborating again with one of film’s greatest writer-directors. ‘Master Gardener’ is the natural successor to the brilliant film ‘The Card Counter’ which will have its world premiere tomorrow at the Venice Film Festival. Character-driven, sexy and surprising, with plenty of intrigue one would expect from a Schrader film.”

As mentioned, Schrader is currently prepping the debut of “The Card Counter,” his new film with Oscar Isaac and Tiffany Haddish about a soldier-turned-poker-player. That film is playing in competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival and is looking to be an awards contender for Schrader.

It’s unclear when production might begin on “Master Gardener,” but it’s clear that Schrader is already putting everything in motion to get started.
