‘Masters Of The Universe’ Trailer: Jared Leto, Idris Elba & Alison Brie Star In Mattel Toy Adaptation Out June 5

After “Barbie,” every Mattel movie project comes with a little more scrutiny. But “Masters Of The Universe” is the one that may matter most, arriving first out of the gate and effectively serving as a test case for how aggressively the company can turn the rest of its toy-box IP into large-scale theatrical franchises.

Masters Of The Universe” is one of several Mattel projects now in motion as the company builds out its post-“Barbie” film strategy, with titles like “Barney,” “Hot Wheels,” and “Thomas the Tank Engine” also in various stages of development. But this is the first major theatrical swing, and its performance could help determine whether Mattel’s ambitions translate into something sustainable or remain a one-off success story.

Still, Amazon MGM has assembled a strong package. With Nicholas Galitzine in the lead and a supporting cast that includes Jared Leto, Alison Brie, Idris Elba, and Kristin Wiig, the film has the kind of ensemble that suggests the studio is aiming beyond simple nostalgia. Behind the camera, Travis Knight (“Bumblebee”) directs from a script by Chris Butler (“Kubo and the Two Strings”), a pairing that gives the project a bit more shape and credibility than most brand extensions tend to inspire. On paper, the pieces are there. Whether that translates into a hit is another matter.

The film also stars Camila Mendes, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Sasheer Zamata, James Purefoy, and Charlotte Riley. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, and Steve Tisch produce, with Bill Bannerman serving as executive producer.

The official logline reads: “Masters of the Universe follows a young man on Earth who discovers a fabulous secret legacy as the prince of an alien planet, and must recover a magic sword and return home to protect his kingdom.”

More specifically, the synopsis says ten-year-old Adam Genn (Galitzine) crash-lands on Earth, becoming separated from the Power Sword of Grayskull. Two decades later, he reclaims the weapon and takes on the mantle of He-Man, returning to defend Eternia against the forces of Skeletor (Leto).

Amazon MGM Studios releases “Masters of the Universe” in theaters on June 5, 2026.
