Matt Damon Talks “Post-Snowden World” Of ‘Bourne 5’

The Bourne UltimatumNever say never. While Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon long resisted the idea of doing another Bourne outing following "The Bourne Ultimatum," the duo never completely ruled it out, always saying that if the right idea came along, they’d entertain the notion of returning to the franchise. And with a release date set for next summer of the still untitled "Bourne 5," Matt Damon has shared with Buzzfeed what sparked the blockbuster reunion.

“We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency, and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change,” the actor said of the initial trilogy of ‘Bourne’ flicks.

“Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world,” he explained about the new film. “It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”

Teasing that the film will kick off in Greece (which is going through economic turmoil) with a finale in Las Vegas (which is a pretty good symbol of capitalism at its most garish), ‘Bourne 5′ could be the most political entry in the series yet. And one has to wonder if the Snowden influence means that Jason Bourne will go from being a target to a whistleblower himself. That said, the franchise has always done a good job of balancing its thematic concerns with good ol’ fashioned popcorn entertainment, so let’s hope they still get the formula right.

‘Bourne 5’ opens on July 29, 2016 and production starts next week.
