According to Variety, Smith is the latest actor to join the upcoming “Star Wars: Episode IX.” While his role is unknown at this time, many are already speculating which side the actor will fight for. His look and overall…Britishness…makes him an easy fit for the First Order. However, he’s a likable guy and could just as easily be a Resistance fighter or even the voice of a new droid. Because we all know that Lucasfilm is obsessed with introducing new droids.

As mentioned, Smith rose to stardom as the star in his three-season run on “Doctor Who.” Since then, the actor has experience on projects with mixed success. On the good side of things, he is recently Emmy-nominated for his work on the Netflix series “The Crown.” However, there’s the other side of the equation where he had starring roles in “Terminator Genisys” and “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” So, yeah, it’s a bit of a mixed bag.

All that being said, Matt Smith is sure to bring his Who-vian love over to the “Star Wars” universe with whatever role he lands. The actor joins the previously announced additions of Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and the return of Lando Calrissian, aka Billy Dee Williams. ‘Episode IX’ also is the return of director J.J. Abrams, who takes over for Rian Johnson after the controversial ‘The Last Jedi.’

“Star Wars: Episode IX” hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
